If It’s Time For Your Annual Checkup

Annual-Checkup

It is important for girls and women to stay on top of their annual checkups to keep their health in order. This type of important annual examination which is often referred to as “well-woman” visit, focuses on the female reproductive system and sexual health. The point of a well-woman exam is to keep you healthy and to give your doctor the opportunity to find and deal with any problems while they’re minor, before they have the opportunity to turn into bigger issues.

The female doctors at Doylestown Women’s Health Center provide both preventative and routine gynecologic care beginning with young adolescents and continuing through adulthood which includes family planning, the childbearing years, menopause and beyond.

What To Expect at Your Annual Exam

A typical gynecologic examination includes a comprehensive medical exam of multiple organ systems including a thyroid, breast, heart, lungs, gastrointestinal and pelvic exam. A PAP smear is performed as a part of the pelvic exam on women over the age of 21, up to the age of 65. Women are also referred for a mammogram and bone density test, depending upon each woman’s individual risk factors and age.

The Start of Puberty is When Girls Should Begin Having Annual Exams

Girls between the ages of 13 and 15 should start getting well-woman checkups as this is when most girls begin going through puberty. Pelvic exams are typically only performed on girls younger than 21 if they have a problem such as pain or an unusual vaginal discharge. Every girl should know that their doctor will be provide them with straight answers on topics like puberty, sexuality, birth control and pregnancy. This is why it’s important for girls to feel comfortable talking about personal matters with their physicians.
