While whooping cough can seem like a persistent cough to adults, it can be detrimental – and even fatal – to a young child's health. Most deaths from whooping cough occur in infants, especially in the window of time between birth and immunization at two months.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that pregnant women should get vaccinated. A recent large study found that pregnant women who vaccinated themselves gave birth to babies who were highly protected from whooping cough during the first few months of life.
