Single Motherhood: Secrets of Being a Successful Single Mother
The doctors and staff at Doylestown Women's Health Center understand that some of our patients are entering the unknown as single mothers. We want these women to feel secure and well-taken care as that is how it should be. We are now a practice compromised entirely of women caring for women, which makes us rather unique.
Single mothers face special challenges. When you feel as though the whole world is on your shoulders, getting a few tips that apply to your unique situation of raising kids on your own can certainly come in handy now and then. Here are a few tips that can help single moms feel prepared to tackle the challenges they face with a positive attitude.
Maintain a Daily Routine
To keep control and to avoid total chaos, try to maintain a daily routine both for your sake and the sake of your child. Have meals at the same time every day and make bedtime a set time. This helps you stay organized and on top of things and helps your child too by letting him or her know exactly what to expect every day.
Build a Support System
All single mothers need people they can turn to for the support they need now and then. To avoid feeling overwhelmed, build a support system so you always have someone to call when you need a listening ear or help watching your child while you run errands. Consider joining a single-parent support group so you can meet & talk with people who share your experiences. Don't be afraid to ask close friends and family for some help when you're feeling overwhelmed as they are most likely very willing to pitch in and help.
Don't Allow Yourself to Feel Guilty
It's common for single mothers to allow guilt to take over when they can't handle all the tasks they wish to accomplish. Instead of feeling guilty, try focusing on all the things you can get done every day as well as the many things with which you provide your child. If you're feeling guilty about a split with an ex, consider joining a support group where you can talk to other parents who are experiencing the same things you're going through.
Schedule "Me" Time
Just as it's important to your child that you spend quality time with him or her every day, it's equally important that you set aside some kids-free time for yourself every now and then. Get a babysitter so you can get out for a bit and do something you enjoy whether that's taking a quick trip to that little shop you've been wanting to explore or visiting a local salon for some pampering. Being a single mom is hard work and you definitely deserve to take some time off once in a while. If you cannot afford a sitter, consider a childcare swap with another mother you know and trust.
