About 14 million Americans are infected annually, and nearly every sexually active person becomes infected at some point in their life. Additionally, it causes 90 percent of cervical cancer cases in women and most cases of cancer of the vulva, penis, vagina and oropharynx (the area encompassing the tonsils, tongue and back of the throat). Some strains of HPV can also cause genital warts.
