Positive Pregnancy Test—Now What?

If you’re reading this, odds are you or your partner took a pregnancy test and got a positive result. Pregnancy can be an exciting time, but it can also be a time of uncertainty. That’s why we’re here to help you navigate this unchartered territory and make sure your pregnancy goes as smoothly as possible.

If you just found out that you’re pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, be sure to visit your local OB/GYN in Doylestown, PA as soon as possible. At Doylestown Women’s Health Center, we’re here to be your #1 pregnancy resource and help guide you through the health and management of your pregnancy.

What To Do When Your Pregnancy Test Is Positive

Double-check your results. The first logical step in this situation is to double-check your results. Although  This may occur due to the presence of hCG, which is a hormone produced during pregnancy. However, there are a few other factors, such as hCG being produced by the pituitary gland, or a chemical pregnancy, that may cause a positive result in the absence of pregnancy. For best results, take your pregnancy test in the morning, when you have enough urine and before the hCG has been diluted throughout the day.

  1. Tell your partner. Need ideas for how to tell your significant other? We have a few suggestions for how to tell your partner that you’re pregnant.

  2. Stop smoking immediately. One of the worst things for your baby is being exposed to tobacco and cigarettes. It is well-known that smoking is very harmful to the baby and may cause a number of birth defects.

  3. Don’t drink alcohol. Celebrating a pregnancy is perfectly okay (and encouraged!)—just make sure you don’t celebrate with alcohol. Furthermore, don’t drink alcohol at all during the duration of your pregnancy because it is dangerous for the baby and may lead to birth defects, such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

  4. Avoid caffeine. This includes coffee, tea, soda, and any other caffeinated beverages. While caffeine is not nearly as dangerous as alcohol or smoking, there is conflicting evidence about whether caffeine is okay during pregnancy. Just to be on the safe side, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) advises pregnant women to limit their caffeine intake to less than 200 milligrams per day. This equates to about one 11 oz. cup of coffee per day.

  5. Book an appointment with your OB/GYN. This step is key. Your OB/GYN is your women’s health expert who will be able to help guide you through your pregnancy and make sure that both you and your baby are happy & healthy. At Doylestown Women’s Health Center, we provide excellent obstetric care in Doylestown, PA.
