Doylestown Women’s Health Center on the Zika Virus in Bucks County Women’s Journal

Doylestown Women’s Health Center was featured this month in the August/September issue of Bucks County Women’s Journal, where we discuss the Zika virus and how to prevent yourself from getting it if you are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant. As an expecting mother, the best way to protect yourself is to refrain from traveling to any area where the Zika virus has been confirmed. However, if avoiding travel isn’t an option, you should speak with your doctor about your travel plans and get an evaluation prior to your departure date.

The article also outlines several steps to reduce the risk of getting a mosquito bite:

  • Use screens on doors and windows
  • Stay in air-conditioned areas, especially at night. Mosquitoes are more attracted to hot temperatures, so they are less likely to be in a cool room.
  • Remove and avoid standing water where mosquitoes tend to breed
  • Long sleeves and long pants are a must. Tuck your pants into your socks or shoes while outdoors.
  • Mosquitoes can be attracted to scented skincare products such as perfume, lotion, and moisturizer. Avoid using these kinds of products while traveling.
  • Use insect repellent.
  • Wear light-colored clothing since mosquitoes are more attracted to dark colors
