    The New York Times recently published an article about new discoveries in babies’ language learning. Using children who were born in one country and quickly adopted into another, researchers found that babies can hear languages before and after they’re born. They’re able to perceive sounds of one language while in the womb and carry those perceptions into their speaking skills later in life, giving them the ability to pronounce certain sounds that aren’t existent in the language they learn to speak after birth.

    The human papillomavirus (HPV) is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. About 14 million Americans are infected annually, and nearly every sexually active person becomes infected at some point in their life. Additionally, it causes 90 percent of cervical cancer cases in women and most cases of cancer of the vulva, penis, vagina and oropharynx (the area encompassing the tonsils, tongue and back of the throat). Some strains of HPV can also cause genital warts.

    Doylestown Women’s Health Center was featured this month in the August/September issue of Bucks County Women’s Journal, where we discuss the Zika virus and how to prevent yourself from getting it if you are pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant. As an expecting mother, the best way to protect yourself is to refrain from traveling to any area where the Zika virus has been confirmed. However, if avoiding travel isn’t an option, you should speak with your doctor about your travel plans and get an evaluation prior to your departure date.

    A story that has dominated the news of late is about the spread of the Zika Virus. This virus is a mosquito-transmitted infection that was first discovered in Uganda in the late 1940s and is common in Africa and Asia. The Zika Virus began spreading widely in the Western Hemisphere during the spring of 2015 when an outbreak occurred in Brazil. As a result of the rapid spread of the virus, the World Health Organization has declared the Zika Virus an international public emergency, due to the growing concern that the virus causes birth defects.
